The Swick family’s enclosed sunroom / Sunrooms in Columbus

When people are looking to add onto their home, they don’t often consider building a sunroom. But they should! Enclosed sunrooms are fun and unique areas that help you unwind from the day.   We build enclosed sunrooms across the country. This past year, we visited the Swick family to hear why they wanted a sunroom and how they’ve enjoyed it since.  Buying an enclosed sunroom: Mary and Mitchell Swick from Pataskala, OH https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIkEAD4-CoEhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ncoy1YgFzQ The Swick’s have lived and worked in the Columbus community for years; Mary as a hospice worker and Mitchell as a school bus driver. The two had always wanted an enclosed sunroom in their home. They love sitting in the sun and enjoying the outdoors, but the Ohio bugs are too pesky in the summer for them to fully enjoy their yard while outside. They spent many years enduring the outdoors, but once they started growing older, the bugs started becoming more annoying. So, they decided enough was enough.  The couple knew that our Premier Partner, Ohio Exteriors, installed enclosed sunrooms, so they called to set up an in-home consultation. After seeing a few pictures from the LivingSpace brochure, they were ready to build.  “When we first got the sunroom, we had a futon couch, so in the fall and in the spring mostly, when it’s really nice out, we’d open up all the windows and we’d sleep out here. It was magnificent – just like camping out.”  The couple now spends 75% to 80% of their time throughout the year in the sunroom, and it makes them feel like they’re in a vacation home each time they walk in. Saturday or Sunday mornings are great times to relax while eating a late breakfast, and both Mary and Mitchell love enjoying nature while still feeling the cool breeze of the ceiling fan on their faces.   They’ve also mentioned that the enclosed sunroom is easy to maintain. Mitchell will take…

Prefab Sunrooms or Other Types of Construction: Which is Better?

Sunroom Types When looking at sunrooms, you typically have four options: prefab sunrooms, stick building, aluminum construction, or DIY sunroom kits. We will be detailing some of the main differences between each type of construction, and how it can impact you as a home owner when considering adding a sunroom to your home.DIYA DIY sunroom should be reserved for the most ambitious homeowners. Some manufacturers and home improvement shops sell their rooms in a DIY kit for those looking to save money or avoid working with contractors. In these instances, a person will use their own tools and home remodeling expertise to build a sunroom extension onto their house. Stick BuildingStick built construction is more familiar to those outside the construction industry. Contractors and firms use this as their preferred method of construction. They use wood to build the walls, trusses, and sometimes the floor of your sunroom. You may be able to see examples of this type of construction in your own neighborhood, as most homes are built using this method. Aluminum ConstructionThose employing an aluminum construction method also cut their materials on-site when building sunrooms. Instead of using wood framing, builders build your sunroom using aluminum framing materials. These sunrooms can be a less expensive option when compared to prefab sunrooms and stick-built sunrooms. Prefabricated A prefab sunroom means you are buying a sunroom that is sized and cut in a controlled factory environment. Prefabrication is used in the construction industry so that buildings, homes, or additions can be built in sections, moved easily, and put together quickly, all while minimizing the errors that can occur during construction. This sometimes enables contractors to have access to an offsite engineering team, who can help answer questions during construction. Why we recommend prefabricated sunroom additions At LivingSpace Sunrooms we manufacture prefab sunrooms for many reasons. We prefabricate our sunrooms because it is the best option available; and allows…

In this post, we outline the steps you can take to best prepare for your sunroom plans to create a room you will love for years to come.  Deciding on a sunroom The decision to buy a sunroom is the beginning of an exciting project that will revitalize your home. In a home that feels too cramped, a sunroom will give additional living space. In a home that feels too familiar, a sunroom will give a new perspective. In a home that feels too dark, a sunroom will give large, spanning windows and unlimited natural lighting.   Any home remodeling project can be stressful, though, for those who don’t know the right steps to take. It can be a daunting task to find the right space for your sunroom, find the right contractor, navigate each customization option, and trust that it will be built effectively. You can approach these sunroom plans as an expert, though, with the right preparation.  Finding the right space Many homeowners put their sunroom onto the back of their home. Some homeowners already have an existing deck space that’s accessible from the backdoor and can easily transition into a sunroom. Others simply want a convenient spot to sit and admire their yardwork and gardening decorations.   There are other advantages to having a backyard sunroom. For one, it provides a great spot to supervise while the kids play outside. You can use it effectively in this spot throughout the seasons to oversee yard work, play lifeguard, referee a pickup football game, or supervise a snowball fight.  There is also, generally, space available for a sunroom off the back of your home. In neighborhoods, houses are spaced strategically to…

5 Indoor Plants That Look Great in a Sunroom

The gardening season always seems to come and go very quickly. With fickle weather, it seems like there’s only a few safe months each year for growing plants.  Luckily, though, the LivingSpace sunroom is a great spot for beautiful indoor plants to grow year-round. Plants thrive in our sunrooms! The climate-controlled environment protects plants against cold temperatures, and the abundant natural light offered by the large windows encourages flowering plants to blossom to their fullest.  Finding the right balance of sunlight You’ll want to be careful about where you place your plants in your sunroom. Some indoor plants need an abundance of sunlight, while others scorch and spot in direct sunlight. This means that some plants make perfect sunroom transplants, while others aren't naturally adapted for it. Saying this, you can always find a spot in your sunroom for the flowers you want to grow.  Our favorite indoor plants It’s so refreshing to see a sunroom filled with plant life, and it’s exciting to see how flowers can prosper when exposed to the open lights in a sunroom. Ivy is one of the indoor plants that thrives in our sunrooms. There are different varieties of ivies that generally show where the plant originated from. These include English ivy, Japanese ivy, Persian ivy, and Russian ivy. English ivy is most commonly grown in the home, but you should be easily able to locate other varieties as well. The process for growing ivies doesn’t differ much between types. Sunrooms are the perfect spot for the ivies to grow, since they grow well when exposed to bright light. If the plant isn’t receiving adequate sunlight, it’ll let you know. An ivy’s leaves will visibly droop as they lose some of their springiness. At this point, the plant is more susceptible to corrosion from pests. If this is the case, put the plant closer to the window and watch it redevelop as it comes back…

The rundown: Tackling Building Codes and Permits

The purpose of building codes One obstacle homeowners face when planning for home additions is the area’s strict building codes. Building codes regulate the procedures and details of construction. The International Code Council (ICC) maintains these codes for states or provincial governments to use. When contractors, like LivingSpace dealers, build onto your home, it is important they do so while obeying the area’s building codes.Building codes aren’t enforced to be annoying. In reality, they are there to protect your home. Building codes were adopted to combat large fires in densely populated urban areas. Since then, they have evolved to also address structure, electrical, ventilation, and construction materials. Now, these restrictions make sure the sunroom is well insulated and protective against natural disasters like tornadoes, earthquakes, or hurricanes. By obeying building codes, you can protect yourself and your home. Selling your home However, life happens, and very few homes fully meet building codes. Some have said that failing to meet building codes means you’re unable to resell your home when the time comes. This is a myth. If it were the case, very few houses would be on the market today. Home inspectors only prevent resell if the code violation poses an immediate threat to the home or those living in it. In an extreme example, a code inspector would not allow a home to be sold if mild winds could rip its sunroom to pieces. Also, low R-values would be cause for concern. These types of violations are determined during construction, which is why it is critical to choose a contractor that cares about building codes and the materials they use. The LivingSpace difference Luckily, the LivingSpace sunroom creates a room that meets building codes in each of our dealer's areas. This is because LivingSpace uses the best materials available…
